Installation Problems

Q1. When the program is installed, it says it is going to put its files in the C:\Program Files\ folder. Most programs are stored in their own folders within the Program Files folder. Why isn't Discovering Jesus?

A. Don't worry! Although the installation screen says it is going to install into c:\Program Files\ it actually goes into the c:\Program Files\Discovering Jesus\ folder.

Q2. I am having trouble installing Discovering Jesus. What can I do?

A. If your system is running the Norton Internet Security 2004 suite, we have had reports that its firewall component can prevent Discovering Jesus (and other programs that use Windows Installer) from installing successfully. To see whether this is the cause of your problem:

  1. Physically disconnect your computer from any network.
  2. Disable Internet Security.
  3. Re-boot your computer.
  4. Install Discovering Jesus.
  5. Re-enable Internet Security.
  6. Physically connect your computer to the network again.

The above advice is also worth following if you have installation problems, but use a different firewall; though we do not have any reports of problems with systems running ZoneAlarm (Pro or free).

Remember: Never use a computer without a firewall on the Internet.

Q3. I am not running Norton Internet Security Suite 2004, but I am still having problems installing Discovering Jesus. What do you suggest?

A. It may be that an Anti-virus program is preventing Discovering Jesus from being installed. To see whether this is the cause of your problem:

  1. Physically disconnect your computer from any network.
  2. Disable your anti-virus program.
  3. Re-boot your computer.
  4. Install Discovering Jesus.
  5. Re-enable your anti-virus program.
  6. Physically connect your computer to the network again.

Q4. I have tried your suggested answers to Q2 and Q3 above, but the program will still not install. What do I try next?

A. If you log on to your computer with a user name (and probably password), it may be that you can only install a program if you have Administrator privileges. Discovering Jesus must be installed by the Computer Administrator (possibly the Administrator or Admin user name) or someone who is a member of the local Administrators group.

Running

Q5. It takes up to 5 minutes before the program starts. What's happening?

A. Almost certainly your anti-virus program is set to virus check programs before they are allowed to run. Discovering Jesus is a very large program (over 250Mbytes) and Norton Anti-Virus and AVG both take quite a while to check a program of this size (how long precisely is likely to depend on the speed of your computer, disk and memory size). If you want to speed things up you could virus check the program, then, if your anti-virus program permits, add the Discovering Jesus program (Dj.exe in the c:\Program Files\Discovering Jesus\ folder) to the list of files excluded from virus checks when run in future.

Q6. At the start of the program, the part of the screen showing the video going back in time goes blank after a few years have been displayed, and I can't use the mouse for one or two minutes until the Nativity Zone starts. How can I get to see the whole video?

A. Try changing the Colour Quality of your display to 16-bit colour (called High Colour, Hi-Color or, sometimes, Medium resolution). To find out what your display is set to at the moment: Right-click on a blank part of the desktop; choose Properties from the list; choose the Settings tab and this should display the Screen Resolution and Color Quality. If the Color Quality is not set to 16-bit color, you could change it to this; re-boot the computer; and then see what happens when you run Discovering Jesus.

This should also cure any similar problems with viewing the video at the end of the program.

Uninstallation

Q7. Help! I cannot uninstall Discovering Jesus.

A. If you needed to take any of the actions described in the answers to Q2, Q3 or Q4, then you will need to follow a similar procedure to uninstall the program.
