Welcome to STP: June 2009

New Publication for June 2009

"The Epistle to the Colossians" by Hamilton SmithWe are pleased to publish a brand new book from the pen of Hamilton Smith:  The Epistle to the Colossians. Written in 1933, but never before published in either book or serialised form, the author brings his easy-to-read style and pithy comments to bear on an epistle which is full of practical instruction for Christians, as we are viewed as the body of Christ on earth linked to our Head in heaven.

"Enticing words may easily play upon our ignorance: rationalism may appeal to the intellect, ritualism to the emotions and superstition to the imagination; but none of these things will reveal Christ to the soul, or form Christ in our lives. They do not lead to Christ.

To meet all these evils and preserve us from them, the apostle presents Christ. Having received Christ, He is the power for our walk; we have everything in Him; we are identified with Him; we derive all nourishment from Him."

Hamilton Smith provides once again a great service in this volume in sharing the results of his own reading and studying of Colossians in order that another generation can enjoy the practical lessons of this epistle.

Published May 2009

"Extracts from the Writings of Thomas Watson" selected by Hamilton SmithWe are pleased to have been able to re-publish Extracts from the Writings of Thomas Watson, the third and final volume in Hamilton Smith's 3-part series of selections from the Puritans entitled "Gleanings from the Past". The extensive writings of Thomas Watson (c1620-1686) have been a source of encouragement and enlightenment to Christians for over 320 years. However, for 21st century readers their language, length, and structure often lessen their impact. Hamilton Smith does a great service with this volume in selecting brief, thought-provoking, easy-to-read extracts and arranging them under topical headings covering the themes of warnings, healing, giving, longing, contentment, poverty, afflictions, persecution, temptation, contention, preaching, praying, meditation, departing and crowning. The volume might have been called "The Best of Thomas Watson", "Thomas Watson for Dummies" or even "The Idiot's Guide to Thomas Watson", but we've retained its original title. Light enough to dip into, but deep enough to challenge your every thought and action with practical wisdom and apt illustrations.

Published April 2009

"What Does The Bible Teach?" by R D (Ron) MahersA booklet for Jehovah's Witnesses, comparing their beliefs on vital topics with the teaching of the Bible: What Does The Bible Teach? by Ron Mahers, now re-printed in an attractive pocket-sized format. Available in single copies or packs of 10 or 100.

"How to Overcome" by J T MawsonBack in print after 40 years, and just as topical today: How to Overcome by J T Mawson. Are you a Christian who desires to live for Christ, know you have the power of the Holy Spirit for this very purpose, but always find yourself defeated? Then this book is for you! The author looks at the enemies which Israel faced as recorded in the book of Judges, and how they won victories over them. He uses these as examples to show how the Christian can overcome five enemies: the World, the Flesh, the Devil, Earthly Things and Carnal Religion. The battle is on: are you prepared for victory?

Summer Reading

Perhaps you missed out on some of our previous publications. Now is a good time to stock up with books to freshen the soul on a bright Summer day! Have you read our paperbacks by contemporary authors:

The Gospel in Job by Yannick Ford (also available in hardback) or Lessons from Ezra or Lessons from Nehemiah by Ted Murray yet?

Or what about one of our re-published good books from the past:

For a book that's easy to dip into, with a number of short chapters, and the associated Bible passages reproduced in the text, what could be better than the first of our new editions of the writings of J T Mawson: Delivering Grace, a practical study in the life of Elisha. It's available in both paperback and hardback.

Hamilton Smith is an early 20th century writer with an easy style and neat turn of phrase, and we can offer you a choice of a New Testament outline of The Gospel of Mark (in paperback or hardback) or The Epistle to the Romans, devotional studies of two of the great Old Testament prophets: Elijah and Elisha, and a collection of Short Papers on the Church.

If you have questions about God's Inspiration of the Scriptures, then William Kelly's book is just the thing, and if you want a good overview of the contents of each individual book in the Bible, then it contains that too! If you really want to know what the Bible really says about the way the Church should operate, the same author's Lectures on the Church is well worth a read; but be prepared to have your ideas challenged! Our William Kelly titles are available in both hardback and paperback editions.

If you are looking for a comprehensive, easy to follow, commentary on the whole of the New Testament, then F B Hole's New Testament Commentary in 4 handy volumes, now available in paperback and hardback, could be just what you need. On the other hand, if you wonder what Brethren ministry was like in the 1930s, why not try The Epistle of Christ, edited by F B Hole, which records a 4-day series of meetings held in Leeds from April 6th-9th 1937, where the speakers included F B Hole, J T Mawson, A J Pollock and Hamilton Smith, to name but a few!

If you are interested in Puritan writings, but find reading the original volumes hard work, why not try Hamilton Smith's selected extracts in 3 volumes of "Gleanings from the Past", now attractively typeset and published in paperback: Extracts from the Letters of Samuel Rutherford and Extracts from the Writings of William Gurnall (his selection from "The Christian in Complete Armour") and Extracts from the Writings of Thomas Watson.

Some of our customers may find it easier (and sometimes quicker and cheaper) to order STP publications through online booksellers. To help in this we have a page of links for customers in the UK, USA, Canada, France, Germany, Australia and Japan. Not all booksellers supply all our books, and new books may take a little time to appear in their catalogues, so not all links may be operational immediately.

For UK customers only, who don't like the idea of using their credit/debit cards on the Internet and who wish to pay for goods in advance by cheque, we have a small selection of items at postage-inclusive prices, which can be purchased from our new online shop.

Please note that, throughout this site, US Dollar prices only apply to books purchased from retailers who obtain our products directly or indirectly from our on-demand printer/distributor in the USA.
